Located in Copacabana, Bolivia, The Virgin of Candeleria is a statue of the Virgin Mary that depicts her as a dark-skinned woman. It was sculpted in 1576 by an Incan craftsman (Country Reports). Believed to work miracles, people flock to the shores of Lake Titicaca to pray to the Virgin.
According to local legend, some local fishermen were caught in a terrible storm in 1576. When they prayed for help, the Virgin appeared to save them, and they built her a shrine in gratitude (Sacred Destinations).
